The Government of Assam has adopted a range of strategies to promote sports as a credible career option for youth by investing in infrastructure, financial incentives, institutional support, and visibility for athletes.

Infrastructure Development:

The state is expanding sports infrastructure across Assam, including construction of multipurpose sports complexes, indoor stadiums, and upgraded facilities in urban and rural areas. Projects under the Directorate of Sports & Youth Welfare include sports complexes in Sualkuchi and Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex in Majuli, indoor stadiums in Dhemaji and Nalbari, and development of hockey arenas and academies at multiple locations, improving access to quality training facilities for youth statewide.

Assam is also emerging as a high-performance sports hub in the Northeast, with plans to establish elite training centres focusing on athletics, archery, taekwondo, table tennis, swimming and more, bringing structured pathways for talent identification and athlete development.

Financial Support and Recognition:

The state continues to grant State Sports Awards to outstanding athletes, coaches, and para-athletes, recognising excellence and encouraging aspirants to excel in sports.

In December 2025, the Chief Minister awarded ₹10 lakh and promised a government job to blind cricket star Simu Das, showing support for inclusivity in sports and career security beyond competitive years.

Assam has also supported residential sports hostels in Guwahati and Dibrugarh, with capacities of 1,000 and 500 respectively, providing structured training environments where young athletes can combine academics and sports.

Career Security:

The Government of Assam has encouraged youth to pursue sports by providing career security and social recognition to outstanding athletes. Meritorious sportspersons are given reservation in government jobs, and exceptional achievers have been directly appointed to senior posts. For instance, sprinter Hima Das and boxer Lovlina Borgohain were appointed as Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP), demonstrating that excellence in sports can lead to prestigious and stable careers. Such measures motivate young athletes to take up sports as a serious profession.
